Reports: Bulls to hire Cheeks as assistant coach

Maurice Cheeks, who played 15 seasons in the NBA with five separate teams, will join the Chicago Bulls as an assistant coach on the staff of new head coach Billy Donovan, multiple outlets reported Monday.

Cheeks, 64, will move over from the staff of the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he had been an assistant coach for nine of the past 10 seasons.

He was a former head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers (2001-05), Philadelphia 76ers (2005-08) and Detroit Pistons (2013-14).

Cheeks was on Donovan’s staff at Oklahoma City the past five seasons.

An ESPN report also indicated the Bulls will hire Josh Longstaff as an assistant coach.

Cheeks’ move will be a homecoming since he attended high school in Chicago before heading off to West Texas A&M University.
